Distraction Osteogenesis is a reliable technique that allows for bone height to be increased. It was first used in the 1900s to lengthen the lower limbs by orthopedic surgeons. It allows for an increase in bone and gum tissue height.
The procedure is performed under sedation in the office. A gum tissue flap is created. The bone is cut and left in place. The device is placed beneath the gum flap with a small handle sticking out inside of your mouth. The gums are stiched back in place, after a short healing period, the handle is turned every day until the desired height is achieved. When the device is removed, the implants are usually placed at the same time.
